"How Fast Can the Church Grow?" Pt. 1

I was asked this question by Nelson Searcy. Nelson and I have been friends for a couple of years and I'm in his Tampa Coaching Network. This question has hit me hard. Why is it that the church in America is stagnant and declining? Why are there some churches that seem to grow rapidly and others don't? How fast can the church grow? I know/heard/read of churches that have grown from 0-7,000 in 8 years, 0-1,200 in 5 years, 0-600 in two years, 250-4,000 in 10 years. And yet there are many churches that haven't experienced any growth in years. In addition to that question Gary Lamb bought me the book Go Big. I believe God was getting my attention.
From the question and the book has risen this question:

What must we do for God to double the impact of StonePoint by the end of January?
I've been challenging StonePoint, my staff and spending a great deal of time to consider what we must do for God to accomplish just that. If we can go from "0-current attendance," then there is no reason why He can't grow the church from "current-double the current." There are some assumptions with that question.

  1. God wants his church to grow. I believe this wholeheartedly. I don't believe God wants people to go to hell or live outside the fellowship of the church. We need new churches, large churches, established churches, community churches but most of all we need growing churches!
  2. God causes the growth to happen. Don't believe it read 1 Corinthians 3:5-9. Jesus even said that "I will build my church."
  3. We inhibit the growth of the church. If God is the one who causes it to grow, then it seems that we are the ones who inhibit that growth. I've spent a number of years serving in unhealthy churches. I believe that one fo the reasons churches don't grow is that they're not healthy. Unhealthy Pastors, leaders and congregations all inhibit the growth of the church. As Rick Warren says, "Healthy things grow!"
  4. We must partner with God as He grows His church. This is where we get tangled up. How do we partner? What must we do? What should we do? How do we do it? With what resources can we do what? The reason we get entangled is because of the questions. Those questions are good and ought to be asked but the focus should be what does God want how do we partner with Him?

I can't claim to have the answers. I'm learning that those who Pastor and lead rapidly growing churches don't have them either. They've seen the hand of God move in the church. I'm asking God to do the same. We're asking God to double the impact of StonePoint by the end of January. Why not? We're asking, praying, making changes and equipping StonePointers to do the same.

By the way the church can grow from a few-3,000 in one day.

I really resonate with what you wrote in your blog. I am also wrestling with doubling. In a sense, I feel like we are in the addition phase...adding people here and there. I want to get to multiplication...adding groups of people. As I pray for me and our church, I will pray for you and yours!!!
